1.      ISRO UNVEILS INDIA’S FIRST VIRTUAL SPACE MUSEUM ‘SPARK

·           S. Somanath, Chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), unveiled the ‘SPARK’: The Space Tech Park, India’s first virtual space technology museum, as part of the Azadi Ka Amrit  Mahotsav celebrations commemorating India’s 75th anniversary of independence.

·           SPARK is the first 3D (three-dimension) virtual space tech park ever created by ISRO.

·           The platform’s beta version offers a virtual tour of SPARK and visitors can virtually board the Space on Wheels bus to take the tour.

1.         INDIAN ARMY CONDUCTS EXERCISE SKYLIGHT

·           The Indian Army performed a Pan-Indian exercise called “Skylight” to test and evaluate its entire satellite-based communication network to ensure operational readiness in the wake of a future conflict.

·           All Army satellite communication assets were activated during the two-week exercise, and a number of technical and operational space domain scenarios were simulated.

·           The exercise was attended by Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and various agencies responsible for space and ground segments.

 

2.         AURANGABAD BECAME 1ST CITY IN INDIA TO GET GOOGLE’S ENVIRONMENTAL INSIGHTS EXPLORER DATA

·           As per the Aurangabad Smart City Development Corporation Limited (ASCDCL), Aurangabad became the first city of India to officially release the Environmental Insights Explorer (EIE) data from Google.

·           EIE data is consistent with Aurangabad’s commitment to the United Nations, with respect to ‘race to zero’ and ‘race to resilience program’.

·           Google’s EIE feature helps cities to measure the carbon emission sources, conduct analysis and identify strategies to reduce emissions that help counter air pollution.

 

3.         EAM DR. S. JAISHANKAR’S VISIT TO CAMBODIA

·           Dr. S. Jaishankar, India’s External Affairs Minister (EAM), visited Cambodia and attended the ASEAN-India Ministerial Meeting (AIFMM) 2022, an annual event that reviews the ASEAN-India partnership, in Phnom Penh, Cambodia’s capital.

·           The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) was founded in 1967 with the signing of the ASEAN Declaration in Bangkok, Thailand (Bangkok Declaration).

·           ASEAN Members – Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam

·           EAM Dr. S Jaishankar also visited the 12th century heritage sites of Ta Prohm Temple and Angkor Wat Temple in Cambodia.

·           The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) is in-charge of the restoration and conservation work at these cultural heritage sites

4.         RBI’S 3RD BI-MONTHLY MONETARY POLICY OF 2022-23

·           The Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) released the RBI’s 3rd bi-monthly monetary policy of FY23

·           Policy retained India’s real Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth at 7.2% for the FY23

·           Real GDP growth for Q1FY24 is projected at 6.7%.

·           The MPC raised the repo rate by 50 basis points to 5.40% from 4.90%.

·           Consequently, Standing Deposit Facility (SDF) Rate adjusted to 5.15% and Marginal Standing Facility (MSF) rate and Bank Rate to 5.65%.

 

5.         SEBI CONSTITUTES 15-MEMBER FPI ADVISORY COMMITTEE

·           Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has constituted a 15-member advisory committee, FPI (Foreign Portfolio Investment) Advisory Committee (FAC) to increase foreign investments and to simplify investment process in the capital markets.

·           The committee will also take care of the increasing participation in the domestic bond markets.

·           Former Chief Economic Advisor (CEA) KV Subramanian has been appointed as the Chairman of the committee.

·           Members – The committee consists of 14 members representing foreign banks, Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and stock Exchange depositories.

·           The committee will suggest ways to amend the existing rules to attract investments, enhance transparency and on issues related to custodians.

6.         GOOGLE LAUNCHES ‘INDIA KI UDAAN‘ TO MARK 75 YEARS OF INDEPENDENCE

·           Google has launched an online project named “India Ki Udaan”, featuring the milestone achievements of India in its 75 years of Independence

·           This pays tribute to India’s rich cultural history and includes iconic moments from the last 75 years.

·           It is published in English and Hindi and allows users to explore around 120 illustrations and 21 stories created by 10 talented artists.

 

7.         RUSSIA WILL WITHDRAW FROM INTERNATIONAL SPACE STATION PROJECT AFTER 2024

·           Russia will pull out of the International Space Station after 2024 and focus on building its own orbiting outpost amid high tensions between Moscow and the West over the fighting in Ukraine.

·           NASA and other international partners will keep the space station running until 2030, while the Russians have been reluctant to make commitments beyond 2024.

·           The space station is jointly run by the space agencies of Russia, the U.S., Europe, Japan and Canada.

·           The first piece was put in orbit in 1998, and the outpost has been continuously inhabited for nearly 22 years.

 

8.         SAFF UNDER-20 FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP 2022

·           India lifted the 2022 South Asian Football Federation(SAFF) Under-20 ( U-20) football championship trophy by defeating Bangladesh 5-2 goals in the final match at Kalinga stadium in Bhubaneswar, Odisha.

·           India won this championship for the second consecutive time.

·           Gurkirat Singh was named the Most Valuable Player of SAFF U20 championship 2022

·           Indian goalkeeper  Som Kumar was named the Best Goalkeeper SAFF U20 championship 2022.

 

9.         HIROSHIMA DAY 2022 – AUGUST 6

·           Hiroshima Day is observed annually across Globe on 6th August in accordance to the remembrance of the world’s first atomic bomb attack on Hiroshima, Japan in 1945, at the end of World War II.

·           On 6th August 1945, the American bomber Boeing B-29 Superfortress Enola Gay dropped 5 ton atomic bomb, that is equivalent to 15,000 tons of TNT (trinitrotoluene), named ‘Little Boy’ on Hiroshima, Japan.

1.      10 more Wetlands added as Ramsar sites in India

·           India has designated 10 more wetlands under the Ramsar Convention or the Convention on Wetlands, taking the total number of Ramsar sites in India to 64 from 54 with area coverage of 12,50,361 hectare (ha).

·           The 10 new sites include 6 sites in Tamil Nadu (TN) and 1 each in Goa, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh and Odisha.

·           To be a Ramsar site, at least one of the nine criteria as defined by the Ramsar Convention of 1971 must be met by the wetland.

·           Sundarbans in WB is the largest Ramsar site in India.

·           Chilika lake is Asia’s largest brackish water lagoon and first Indian wetland of international importance under the Ramsar Convention.

·           The United Kingdom (175) has maximum Ramsar sites whereas Bolivia spans the largest area with 148,000 sq km under the Convention protection.

1.      India, Vietnam Bilateral Army Exercise ‘VINBAX 2022‘

·           The 3rd edition of Vietnam-India bilateral army exercise ‘Ex VINBAX 2022‘ is scheduled to be conducted at Chandimandir in Haryana from August 1-20, 2022

·           The theme of Ex VINBAX – 2022 is employment and deployment of an Engineer Company and a Medical Team as part of United Nations Contingent for Peace Keeping Operations.

·           There will be field training exercise which will enhance mutual confidence, inter-operability and enable sharing of best practices between both the armies.

·           The troops of both the Contingents will learn about the social and cultural heritage of each other.

·           Vietnam is the 15th largest trade partner of India and India is its 10th largest partner with bilateral trade standing at USD 11.12 billion in 2020-21.

1.      Point 5140 at Dras sector named as Gun Hill to mark victory of Operation Vijay

·           Point 5140 at Dras, in Kargil sector was christened as “Gun Hill” to commemorate the victory of Indian Armed Forces (IAF) and pay tribute to the sacrifice of the war heroes in “Operation Vijay”.

·           The task of capturing Point 5140, a strategically important mountain peak in the Dras sector, was assigned to 13 JAK Rif(Jammu & Kashmir Rifles) under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Yogesh Kumar Joshi on 17 June 1999.

·           Operation Vijay in 1999 :- The Kargil War, also known as the Kargil conflict was an armed conflict fought between India and Pakistan from May to July 1999 in the Kargil district of Jammu and Kashmir and elsewhere along the Line of Control (LoC). In India, the operation which carried by Indian military to clear out the Kargil sector is called as Operation Vijay.

·           Operation Vijay in 1961 :- The Liberation Day of Goa is celebrated on Dec 19 every year after the Indian Armed Forces liberated it from the Portuguese rule in 1961 and called it ‘Operation Vijay.’

1.      IAF to Phase Out Remaining 4 MiG-21 Squadrons by 2025

·           The Indian Air Force (IAF) has planned to phase out four MiG-21 fighter squadrons by 2025.

·           At present, the IAF has around 70 – MiG-21 aircraft and 50 MiG-29 variants.

·           The IAF has also planned to phase out the 3 squadrons of MiG-29 fighter jets in the next 5 years.

·           One of the MiG-21 fighter squadrons, Sri Nagar-based No 51 Squadron(also known as “Sword Arms,”), is set to retire from service in September 2022.

·           The other 3 squadrons at Uttarlai, Suratgarh and Nal in Rajasthan will subsequently retire by 2025.

·           TheMiG variants were first launched in 1963. The MiG-21 is India’s longest-serving fighter plane.

·           The aircraft was designed by the Mikoyan-Gurevich Design Bureau (OKB) of the erstwhile Soviet Union, and it made its maiden flight on 16 June, 1955.

1.       EXPAT INSIDER 2022 RANKINGS: INDIA RANKS 36TH OUT OF 52 COUNTRIES

·         According to the Expat Insider 2022 Rankings published by Inter Nations headquartered at Germany, India is ranked 36th out of 52 nations on the list, with a high affordability score.

·         Mexico has topped the Expat Insider 2022 Rankings.  and Indonesia’s at Rank 2

·         Kuwait, ranked 52nd, is the worst country for expats.

·         A person who dwells outside of their nation of origin is known as an expatriate (shortly known as “expat”).

·         The USA is ranked 14, Canada 23 ,and China is at 33.

·         Taiwan, at Rank 3, is regarded as the best in terms of healthcare.

·         India, which came in at number 36, performed best in terms of affordability and access to healthcare.

·         India ranks low in the Quality of Life Index: India is at the bottom 10 spot for all subcategories except Health & Well-Being (19th).

1.       GOI AMENDS FLAG CODE OF INDIA 2022 TO ALLOW TRI-COLOUR TO BE FLOWN DAY AND NIGHT

·         The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), Government of India (GoI), has amended the Flag Code of India 2002, to allow the tricolour to be displayed in open and on individual houses or buildings throughout the day and night.

·         Previously, the Flag could only be hoisted between sunrise and sunset.

·         The decision comes as the GoI sets to launch the “Har Ghar Tiranga” (Flag hoisting in every home) campaign from August 13-15, 2022, as part of the “Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav

·         The Flag Code of India, 2002, and the Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act, 1971, govern the display, hoisting, and use of the Indian National Flag.

1.       YOUTH IN INDIA 2022’ REPORT

·         The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) has released a report titled ‘Youth in India 2022’ stating that the population share of the youth has started declining as the share of the elderly is expected to steadily surge during 2021-2036.

·         As per National Youth Policy, 2014, Youth is defined as a person in the age group of 15-29 years.

·         Proportion of youth to the total population had increased from 26.6% in 1991 to 27.9% in 2016 and then projected to start a downward trend and to reach 22.7% by year 2036 i.e. in the latter half of 2011-2036 period.

·         On the contrary, the proportion of elderly population to the total population has increased from 6.8% in 1991 to 9.2% in 2016 and is projected to reach 14.9% in 2036.

·         Bihar and Uttar Pradesh (UP), which experienced a rise in proportion of youth population to total population till 2021, are expected to see a decline from hereon

·         Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Himachal Pradesh are projected to see a higher elderly population than the youth by 2036.

·         The total youth population increased from 222.7 million in 1991 to 333.4 million in 2011 and was projected to reach 371.4 million by 2021 and, thereafter, decrease to 345.5 million by 2036,

·         As per the 2022 edition of the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs Population Division(UNDESA)’s World Population Prospects (WPP), India is projected to surpass China as the world’s most populous country in 2023.

·         The share of the global population aged 65 years or above is projected to rise from 10% in 2022 to 16% in 2050.

 

2.       MADHYA PRADESH’S BURHANPUR BECOMES INDIA’S FIRST ‘HARGHARJAL’ CERTIFIED DISTRICT

·         Burhanpur district of Madhya Pradesh (MP) became India’s first ‘HarGharJal’ certified district, with all the 254 villages in the district having access to safe drinking water under Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) .

·         Burhanpur, also known as the ‘Darwaza of Dakhin’ or ‘Gateway of Deccan’.

·         As of now, three States – Goa, Telangana and Haryana and three UTs – Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Dadar and Nagar Haveli & Daman and Diu, and Puducherry have provided 100% tap water coverage.

·         Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) was launched in 2019 under the Jal Shakti Ministry.

·         It envisages supply of safe drinking water to every rural household through Functional Household Tap Connections (FHTC) by 2024.

·         Goa became the first state to reach the target.
