1. UNITED
NATIONS DAY OBSERVED ON 24TH OCTOBER
i. 24th
October is celebrated as United Nations
Day since 1948.
ii. This
year's aim is to highlight concrete actions people can take to help achieve the
Sustainable Development Goals.
2. RATAN
TATA REPLACES CYRUS MISTRY AS TATA SONS CHAIRMAN
i. In one of
the biggest corporate sector, the Tata Sons Board has appointed Ratan Tata as
the interim chairman of the group after replacing Cyrus Mistry.
ii. The
decision was taken at a Board meeting.
iii. Mistry
has resigned from his post as chairman.
3. INDIAN
ARMY TEAM WINS GOLD MEDAL IN GRUELLING CAMBRIAN PATROL EXERCISE
i. A team
from the Indian Army's Gorkha Rifles has won a gold medal at one of the most
gruelling exercises in the world.
ii. Team 2/8
Gorkha was awarded a gold medal in Exercise Cambrian Patrol organized by the
British Army.
iii. The
medal went to the 8 men of the 2nd Battalion of 8 Gorkha Rifles.
4. ECI
AMENDS ELECTION RULES TO ALLOW E-TRANSFER OF POSTAL BALLOT
i. The
Election Commission of India has amended the Conduct of Election Rules, 1961 to
facilitate the e-transfer of postal ballot.
ii. The new
rules will provide power to returning officer in any constituency to send
postal ballots to an eligible voter by electronic means as specified by the
ECI.
iii. It will
be helpful to voters who are unable to exercise their franchise due to either the
nature of their job or geographical location of their posting.
iv. The
returning officer can send ballot through a web portal with a ‘One Time
Password to voters.
5. PM
NARENDRA MODI LAUNCHES URJA GANGA IN VARANASI
I. PM
Narendra Modi has laid the foundation stone of Urja Ganga, the highly ambitious
gas pipeline project in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh.
ii. The gas
pipeline project aims to provide piped cooking
gas to residents of the eastern region of the country and CNG gas for
the vehicles.
6. WORLD
BANK MUST AID COUNTRIES TO MANAGE SHIFT AWAY FROM COAL
I. The World
Coal Association has urged global
development lenders like the World Bank and Asian Development Bank to provide help countries including India to
shift away from coal for energy purpose.
ii. It will help
them to shift from their to more efficient technologies so that they can meet
their COP21 commitments.
iii. Coal is
backbone of countries energy mix to meet their energy demands.
