1.         WINGS INDIA 2024: ASIA’S LARGEST EVENT ON CIVIL AVIATION

·           Union Minister for Civil Aviation, Jyotiraditya M Scindia inaugurated Asia’s Largest Aviation Expo-Wings India 2024 at Begumpet Airport in Hyderabad, Telangana

·           The theme for the show was “Connecting India to the World in AmritKaal: Setting the Stage for India Civil Aviation @2047.”

·           India’s First Indigenously Designed and Manufactured Aircraft Seat Launched at Wings India 2024

 

2.         54TH ANNUAL MEETING OF WEF HELD IN DAVOS

·           The 54th Annual Meeting of the World Economic Forum(WEF), also known as “Davos Summit 2024” was held at Swiss Alpine School, Davos in Switzerland

·           The theme of 2024 summit is “Rebuilding Trust.

·           India in partnership with WEF launched the “Global Good Alliance for Gender Equity and Equality”  to bring together world’s best practices, knowledge sharing and investments in the identified areas of women’s health, education and enterprise.

·           Union Minister Smriti Irani announced the establishment of the Business 20 (B20) Global Institute.

·           During the discussion titled ‘Preparing for Disease X’ at WEF 2024, health industry leaders discussed the importance of preplanning for the outbreak of a hypothetical “Disease X”

3.         FREEDOM OF THE CITY OF LONDON” AWARD

·           The City of London Corporation honoured Ajit Mishra, an India-born Lawyer in the United Kingdom(UK) with the “Freedom of the City of London” Award for his contribution to strengthening the business partnership between the City of London and India.

·           The origin of Freedom of the City of London dates back to the 13th century(1237). It is one of the oldest surviving traditional ceremonies still in existence.

·           Before 1996, Freedom was only open to British or Commonwealth Citizens. Later it was extended globally to admit persons of any nationality.

·           Previous Notable recipients of this award include the first Prime Minister(PM) of India, Jawahar Lal Nehru, the First President of South Africa Nelson Mandela, former PMs of the United Kingdom- Winston Churchill and Margaret Thatcher, Microsoft Founder Bill Gates, among others.

 

4.         INDIAN NAVY TESTS BRAHMOS MISSILE

·           Indian Navy (IN), in collaboration with BrahMos Aerospace Private Limited (BAPL), test-fired an extended-range BrahMos supersonic cruise missile (BrahMos ER) 

·           The BrahMos ER is developed by BAPL.

·           BAPL is a joint venture (JV) between Russia’s NPO Mashinostroyeniya (NPO Mash) and India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).

·           BrahMos ER is an improved variant of the basic BrahMos missile, with a range of around 450 to 500 kilometres, compared to 290 kilometres for the baseline version.

·           The two-stage missile operates on the self-guided “fire-and-forget” principle.

5.         AUSTRALIA’S BIG BASH LEAGUE 2023-24 TITLE 

·           Brisbane Heat cricket team won Australia’s Big Bash League(BBL) 2023-24 title by defeating Sydney Sixers in the finals held at Sydney Cricket Ground, Sydney(Australia).

·           Spencer Johnson(Brisbane Heat) was named man of the match(Finals).

·           The Big Bash League is Australia’s premier domestic Twenty20 cricket competition which has been held since 2011.

 

6.         BOOK  ‘A PROMISED NATION HON’BLE SHRI NARENDRA MODI

·           Union Minister of Home Affairs Amit Shah launched a book titled, ‘A Promised Nation Hon’ble Shri Narendra Modi- the Maker of New India’ 

·           The book is written in Braille script to help people with visual impairment to know about the life journey of Narendra Modi, the 14th Prime Minister(PM) of India.

 

7.         75TH REPUBLIC DAY OF INDIA- JANUARY 26, 2024

·           The republic day events and parade were held at the newly-renovated and renamed Kartavya Path (previously known as Rajpath) in New Delhi, Delhi.

·           Theme of R-Day 2024: ‘Viksit Bharat’ (Developed India) and ‘Bharat- Loktantra ki Matruka‘ (Bharat – The Mother of Democracy)

·           President of France Emmanuel Macron was the chief guest for Republic Day 2024

 

8.         PLASTIC WASTE REDUCTION-LINKED BOND BY WORLD BANK

·           World Bank launched 7-year USD 100 million principal-protected Plastic Waste Reduction-Linked Bond to support the World Bank’s sustainable development activities globally.

·           Citi served as the Lead Manager for this bond.

·           This bond has a unique feature of linking investors’ return to the issuance and monetization of Plastic Waste Recycling Credits, Plastic Waste Collection Credits (collectively known as Plastic Credits), and Verified Carbon Units (“VCUs”) from two plastic waste collection and recycling projects in Ghana and Indonesia.

·           The Bond will be listed on the Luxembourg Stock Exchange in Luxembourg

·           The bond was issued at par providing investors with a minimum guaranteed return of approx. 1.75%.

9.         PADMA AWARDS 2024

·           Droupadi Murmu, the President of India has approved the conferment of 132 Padma Awards for 2024.
The official list released comprises 5 Padma Vibhushan, 17 Padma Bhushan, and 110 Padma Shri awards, which include 2 duo cases (in a duo case, the award is counted as one).

·           The list also comprises 8 persons from the category of Foreigners/ NRI/ PIO/OCI and 9 Posthumous awardees..A total of six foreigners were included in the list of winners of the Padma Awards for the year 2024..

·           Among 6 foreign nationals, 4 people are from France, one from Taiwan and Papua New Guinea each.

·           The Padma Vibhushan, India’s second highest award, has been conferred to 5 eminent personalities this year.

·           These include former Vice President Venkaiah Naidu, renowned Bharatnatyam dancer Padma Subrahmanyam, veteran actor Chiranjeevi, noted social reformer Bindeshwar Pathak (posthumous) and acclaimed dancer Vyjayantimala Bali.

 

10.      TSHERING TOBGAY SET TO BECOME PM OF BHUTAN FOR 2ND TIME

·           Bhutan’s former Prime Minister (PMTshering Tobgay, President of People’s Democratic Party (PDP), is set to become PM of Bhutan for 2nd term.

·           He served as PM for the 1st time from 2013 to 2018.

·           TsheringTobgay will succeed LotayTshering, who served as the PM of Bhutan from 2018 to 2023.

·           PDP won 30 of the 47 seats in the parliament during the General Election of the 4th National Assembly.
In 2008, Bhutan converted from an absolute monarchy to a constitutional monarchy with a parliamentary government.

·           The King of Bhutan is the head of the state whereas the PM is the head of the government.

·           The Parliament of Bhutan consists of the King of Bhutan, the National Council (upper house), and the National Assembly (lower house).

11.      NITISH KUMAR SWORN IN AS BIHAR CM FOR 9TH TIME

·           Janata Dal (United) (JD-U) President Nitish Kumar took oath as the Chief Minister (CM) of Bihar for the 9th time after he joined hands with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA)

·           He was administered the oath of office by  Bihar Governor Rajendra Arlekar at Raj Bhavan, Patna (Bihar).

·           Along with him, Samrat Chaudhury, and Vijay Kumar Sinha took oath as Deputy CMs.

 

12.      WORLD LEPROSY DAY 2024- JANUARY 28

·           World Leprosy Day (WLD) is annually observed across the globe on the last Sunday of January to celebrate people who have experienced leprosy, also known as Hansen’s disease, and to promote the dignity of people affected by the disease.

·           The 2024 theme of WLD is, “Beat Leprosy.”

·           WLD was established by the French journalist Raoul Follereau in 1954

13.      DIAMOND JUBILEE CELEBRATION OF SUPREME COURT OF INDIA

·           The Prime Minister (PM) of India Narendra Modi inaugurated the Diamond Jubilee (75th Year) celebration of the Supreme Court of India (SCI) at the Supreme Court auditorium in Delhi.

·           PM Modi launched multiple citizen-centric information and technology initiatives – Digital Supreme Court Reports(SCR), Digital Courts 2.0 and new website of Supreme Court(https://www.sci.gov.in/)

14.      INDIA-SAUDI ARABIA MILITARY EXERCISE ‘SADA TANSEEQ’

·           The inaugural edition of the India-Saudi Arabia joint military exercise, “SADA TANSEEQ“, started at Mahajan, Rajasthan.

·           The primary aim of ‘SADA TANSEEQ’ is to provide intensive training to troops from both nations in executing Joint Operations within Semi Desert terrain under Chapter VII of the United Nations (UN) Charter.

15.      69TH FILMFARE AWARDS

·           The 69th Hyundai Filmfare Awards (Filmfare Awards 2024) was held in Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT City) in Gandhinagar, Gujarat

·           Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s directorial venture “12th Fail” won 5 awards at the 69th Filmfare Awards 2024, including Best Film and Best Director.

·           Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s “Animal” movie also won 5 awards including Best Actor In A Leading Role (Male) and Best Music Album.

·           Best Actor in a Leading Role (Female)- Alia Bhatt (Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani)

 

16.      14TH NATIONAL VOTERS DAY

·           DroupadiMurmu, President of India, presented the Best Electoral Practices Awards 2023 during the event organised by Election Commission of India(ECI) as a part of the 14th National Voters Day (NVD 2023) in New Delhi, Delhi.

·           A total 16 awards were presented during the event.. These include, Best Electoral Practices Awards 2023 to 13 individuals and ECI Media Awards to 3 Organization.

·           During the event, ECI also launches a voter awareness campaign with the tagline, “Chunavka Parv, Deshka Garv” (Festival of Elections, Pride of the Nation), ahead of the Lok Sabha Elections 2024.

 

17.      COMOROS PRESIDENT

·           Azali Assoumani has been re-elected as the President of  the Union of Comoros for a fourth 5 year term .

·           He won the 2024 Comorian Presidential Election with 62.97% of the total votes.

·           Azali Assoumani has been serving as the President of Comoros since 1999.

·           Comoros is an archipelagic country made up of 3 islands in Southeastern Africa.

·           Capital– Moroni

 

18.      IRAN SIMULTANEOUSLY LAUNCHES 3 SATELLITES

·           Iran simultaneously launched 3 satellites for the 1st time using the 2-stage, liquid-fueled Simorgh (Phoenix) Satellite Launch Vehicle (SLV) developed by the Ministry of Defence.

·           The satellites were launched from the Imam Khomeini Spaceport in Semnan province, Iran into Low Earth Orbit (LEO).

·           The 3 satellites incldues a larger satellite named Mahda and two nanosatellites, Keyhan-2 and Hatef-1.

·           Mahda, a “research satellite” developed by Iran’s Space Agency (ISA), is designed to test advanced satellite subsystems.

·           Keyhan 2 and Hatef 1 nano-satellites have been developed by Iran Electronics Industries (IEI), a state-owned subsidiary of the Ministry of Defence.

19.      INDIAN NAVY DECOMMISSIONED INS NIRUPAK

·           The Indian Naval Ship (INSNirupak, an indigenously designed and built hydrographic survey ship, was decommissioned at the Naval Dockyard, Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh(AP).

·           The ship was decommissioned after 38 years of service to the nation.

·           INSNirupak, the 3rd ship of the Sandhayak class, was launched on June 1981 at Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd(GRSE) in Kolkata, West Bengal(WB).

 

20.      INS SUMITRA CARRIED OUT TWO SUCCESSFUL ANTI PIRACY OPERATIONS

·           INS Sumitra successfully carried out Two anti-piracy operations in the Southern Arabian Sea approximately 850 nautical miles (nm) West of Kochi, Kerala.

·           In less than 36 hours, INS Sumitra rescued two hijacked Fishing Vessels (FVs) and prevented misuse of these FVs for acts of Piracy on Merchant Vessels.

·           INS Sumitra responded to a distress message from Iranian-flagged FV Iman and rescued the FV and her crew of 17 Iranian Nationals from pirates

·           INS Sumitra also rescued another Iranian-flagged FV Al Naeemi and her Crew of 19 Pakistani Nationals from 11 Somali Pirates.

·           INS Sumitra is an indigenous Offshore Patrol Vessel deployed for Anti-Piracy and Maritime Security Operations in East of Somalia and the Gulf of Aden.

 

21.      AUSTRALIAN OPEN TENNIS 2024

·           Jannik Sinner of Italy won the men’s singles title, while Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus won the women’s singles title at the Australian Open (AO) 2024 held at Rod Laver Arena, Melbourne, Australia.

·           India’s Rohan Machanda Bopanna became the oldest man (at 43 years and 329 days) to win a Grand Slam after he and his partner Matthew Ebden (Australia) won the men’s doubles title at the Australian Open.

·           Australian Open 2024, the 112th edition of the Australian Open

·           The Australian Open is played on hard courts.

·           Rohan Bopanna also became the oldest world No. 1 in the Pepperstone Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) men’s doubles at 43 years and 331 days Rankings as per the list released by ATP

 

22.      FOOTBALL: KALINGA SUPER CUP 2024 FINAL

·           Fourth edition of the 2024 Indian Super Cup (also known as the 2024 Kalinga Super Cup) final football match was held between East Bengal FC and Odisha FC at the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar, Odisha.

·           East Bengal FC won the match 3-2 and secured the Kalinga Super Cup 2024 defeating Odisha FC

·           Odisha FC’s Lalthuammawia Ralte was adjudged the Best Goalkeeper of the tournament

 

23.      UN INTERNATIONAL DAY OF CLEAN ENERGY – 26 JANUARY 2024

·           The first-ever United Nations (UNInternational Day of Clean Energy was globally observed on 26 January 2024 to create awareness and mobilise action towards a fair and inclusive transition to clean energy for the benefit of people and the planet.

·           26 January is also the founding date of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), 26 January 2024 marks the 15th anniversary of IRENA.
