CENTRAL GOVT APPROVES 8.1% EPF INTEREST RATE FOR 2021-22
·
The Central Government
has officially approved 8.1% rate of interest on Employees’ Provident Fund
(EPF) deposits for 2021-22, which is down by 40 basis points from 8.5% provided
in 2020-21.
·
This new interest rate
is the lowest since 1977-78(over four-decade low), when it stood at 8%.
·
This decision regarding
interest rate cut was taken in March 2022 by Employees’ Provident Fund
Organisation (EPFO).
·
The EPFO invests 85% of
its annual accruals in debt instruments, including government securities and
bonds, and 15% in equity through ETFs (Exchange-Traded Fund).
·
The earnings from both
debt and equity are used to calculate the interest payment.

“SHRESHTA” SCHEME FOR MERITORIOUS STUDENTS OF SCHEDULED
CASTES
·
Union Minister Dr.
Virendra Kumar, Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment (MoSJE), launched
the Scheme for Residential Education for Students in High Schools in Targeted
Areas (SRESHTA)
·
SHRESHTA was created in
response to the Constitutional mandate to provide quality education and
opportunities for even the poorest Scheduled Caste (SC) students.
·
The scheme will provide
meritorious poor students from SC communities, whose parental income is less
than Rs. 2.5 lakh per annum, with free access to a high-quality education (from
Class 9 to 12).
·
Approximately 3,000
such students from various states and Union Territories (UTs) are selected each
year under the scheme through a transparent mechanism called the National
Entrance Test for SHRESHTA (NETS),
which is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA).
·
The scholarships will
be funded by GoI, which will cover the school fee (including tuition) and
hostel fee (including mess charges) via Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT).

INDIAN AIRFORCE HERITAGE CENTRE
·
Indian Air Force signed
a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Chandigarh administration for setting
up of a Firs-of-its kind Indian Air Force Heritage Centre in Union Territory of
Chandigarh.
·
Simulators,
decommissioned aircraft, aero engines, and other IAF artefacts will be housed
in this facility.

INDIA & BANGLADESH ARE REBOOTING THEIR RAIL LINK
·
The passenger train
services between India and Bangladesh were resumed with Bandhan Express
(Kolkata, West Bengal, India to Khulna, Bangladesh) and Maitree Express
(Dhaka, Bangladesh to Kolkata, West Bengal), 2 years after these trains
were stopped on 28th March 2020, due to COVID-19 pandemic.
·
The Mitali Express, a 3rd train connecting New Jalpaiguri in North Bengal,
West Bengal with Dhaka,Bangladesh will be flagged off in June 2022 by
Railways ministers of both India and Bangladesh.
·
So far, 5 rail links
have been rebooted between India and Bangladesh, which include Petrapole (India)-Benapole
(Bangladesh), Gede (India)-Darshana (Bangladesh),
Singhabad (India)-Rohanpur (Bangladesh), Radhikapur (India)-Birol
(Bangladesh), Haldibari (India)-Chilahati (Bangladesh).

KIYAVERSE: KIYA.AI LAUNCHES INDIA’S 1ST BANKING
METAVERSE

India’s first banking
metaverse namely ‘Kiyaverse’ has been launched by Kiya.ai in Mumbai, Maharashtra
which intends to merge use cases of real-world banking with metaverse banking
through an avatar (virtual humanoid) based interactions.
·
Kiyaverse will allow
customers to transact, access banking information, and obtain various banking
products virtually from the comfort of their own homes.
·
Metaverse is a network of
3D virtual worlds that uses augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), and
blockchain, along with concepts from social media, to create spaces for user
interaction mimicking the real world.
·
It covers nearly
everything, such as games, meetings, and shopping.
·
Companies that provide
Metaverse development services to their global clients include Tech Mahindra (TechMVerse), Wipro, Accenture, Infosys.

of Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) became the richest man in India as well as
in Asia with a net worth of USD 99.7 billion, surpassing Gautam Adani, chairman
and founder of the Adani Group whose net worth was at USD 98.7 billion.

ranked as the 8th richest man in the world whereas GautamAdani was ranked 9th
on the list.

1. TRW’S ROAD ACCIDENTS IN INDIA 2020

As per report ‘Road accidents in India — 2020’, prepared by
Transport Research Wing (TRW) of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways
(MoRTH), the number of road accidents has been on decline since 2016 except for
a marginal increase of 0.46 per cent in 2018.
·
Traffic accidents declined by 18.46% on average, deaths
decreased by 12.84%, and injuries decreased by 22.84% in 2020.
·
A decline in the number of fatal accidents, i.e., accidents
involving at least one death. A total of 1, 20,806 fatal accidents were
reported in 2020, which is 12.23 per cent lower than the 2019 figure of 1,
37,689.

1. ‘GATISAKTHI’ TRAINS – INDIA’S 1ST
SEMI-HIGH SPEED FREIGHT TRAINS
• Indian
Railways announced its plan of introducing India’s 1st Semi-High Speed Freight
Trains by December 2022.
• The
trains mocked as ‘Gati Shakti’ trains are capable of operating at a speed of
160 km/hour carrying 16-coach is based on the
Vande Bharat platform, and currently being manufactured at the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai.
• Indian
Railways is set to increase its capacity in freight transportation to 45% in
2030, from the current 27%.
• At
present, the overall target is set to 25 such freight trains, with 2 of them to
be delivered by ICF in December 2022.
• As
of now, 74 new ‘Gati-Shakti Multi-Modal
Cargo Terminal (GCT) locations’ across India (with 20 from South India) were
identified by the Indian Railways under the ‘Gati-Shakti Multi Model Cargo
Terminal’ policy.

ABHILASHA BARAK BECOMES 1ST WOMAN COMBAT AVIATOR IN THE
INDIAN ARMY
·
Captain Abhilasha
Barak, (26 years old) from Haryana, has become the first woman combat aviator
to join the Indian Army Aviation Corps as
a helicopter pilot.
·
She graduated at a
ceremony held at the Combat Army Aviation Training School in Nashik,
Maharashtra.
·
The Army Aviation
Corps, raised in November 1986, operates ALH, Rudra helicopters (an armed
variant of ALH), Chetaks, Cheetahs and Cheetal helicopters
·
In 2021, the Indian
Army has decided to allow women officers to opt for its aviation wing.
·
Until now, the women
officers were assigned only ground duties in army aviation.
3.
NATIONAL ACHIEVEMENT SURVEY (NAS) 2021
·
The Department of
School Education and Literacy, Ministry of Education has released the National
Achievement Survey (NAS) 2021 report assessing the state of the School
education system in India.
·
The report provides a
comprehensive evaluation of children’s learning competencies at classes III, V, VIII and X on subjects
such as languages, mathematics, and science with a cycle period of three years.
·
The last NAS Survey was
conducted in 2017.
·
The Survey saw
participation of about 34 lakh students from 1.18 lakh schools in 720 districts
from both rural and urban areas.
·
The National average percentage of students
declined to 59 percent for Class third,
dropping by 10 percent to 49 percent in class fifth, 41.9 percent in class
eight and 37.8 percent in class ten.
·
Among the States, Maharashtra scored above average with a
score of 59 percent in class 3 but it consistently dropped to 49 percent, 41
percent and 37.8 percent in class 5, 8 and 10 respectively.
4.
RBI CANCELS REGISTRATION OF 5 NBFCS
·
The Reserve Bank of
India (RBI) in exercise of the powers conferred under Section 45-IA (6) (iv) of
the RBI Act, 1934 has cancelled the Certificate of Registration (CoR) issued to
the following five Non-Banking Financial Companies (NBFCs).
·
The non-bank lenders
whose registrations were cancelled by RBI on Wednesday include UMB Securities Ltd, Anashri Finvest Ltd, Chadha Finance Private Ltd ,Alexcy Tracon Pvt Ltd and Jhuria Financial Services Pvt Ltd.
·
The RBI also revised
the ceiling on loans to individuals
for carrying out repairs/additions/alterations to their homes to Rs 10 lakh in metros from Rs 5 lakh;
and Rs 6 lakh in rural to and semi
urban areas from Rs 2 lakh earlier.

BRICS’S NDB TO OPEN INDIA’S REGIONAL OFFICE IN GUJARAT

New Development Bank
(NDB) formerly referred to as the BRICS(Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South
Africa) Development Bank, is set to open its regional office in India at the
Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT City), Gujarat
·
Indian Regional
Office(IRO), in coordination with NDB Headquarters(Shanghai), will focus on
initial project preparation and technical assistance, pipeline development,
project implementation and monitoring as well as regional portfolio management.

SBI INTRODUCES XPRESS CREDIT ON YONO
·
The State Bank of India
(SBI) has launched the personal loan product ‘Xpress Credit’ for salaried
customers on its digital banking platform “YONO”.

The eligible customers
can avail of personal loans,
Real-time Xpress Credit (RTXC), up to Rs
35 lakhs through the YONO app, without
any paperwork.

Facility under NSM.

PARAM PORUL is equipped
with a mix of Central Processing Unit (CPU) nodes, Graphics Processing Unit
(GPU) nodes, High Memory nodes, High throughput storage and high performance
Infiniband interconnect

It works on Direct Contact Liquid Cooling Technology
to obtain a high power usage effectiveness and thereby reducing the operational
cost.

So far under the National Superconducting Mission, 15
supercomputers have been installed across the nation with compute capacity of
24 petaflops.

Justin Thomas, an
American professional golfer, won the 104th PGA Championship (2022) and claimed
his 2nd Wanamaker Trophy, defeating Will Zalatoris (America).

The 2022 PGA
Championship was held in Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Oklahoma, the
United States of America(USA).
·
The PGA Championship is
an annual golf tournament conducted by the Professional Golfers’ Association of
America. It is one of the four men’s major championships in professional golf.

PM NARENDRA MODI VISIT TO JAPAN FOR QUAD LEADERS’ MEETING
2022
·
The Prime Minister (PM)
of India Narendra Modi visited Japan to participate in the 4th and 2nd
in-person QUAD (Quadrilateral) Leaders’ Meeting 2022 in Tokyo, Japan along with
the United States (US) President Joseph Robinette Biden Jr.; and PM of
Australia, Anthony Norman Albanese.

The QUAD countries are Australia, India, Japan, and the US.
·
The meeting saw the
announcement of a Quad Climate Change
Adaptation and Mitigation Package
(Q-CHAMP) with ‘mitigation’ and ‘adaptation’ as its two themes.

The QUAD nations also
announced the launch of ‘Quad Fellowship
program’ which will be offered by the Quad to students from four countries.
·
The Government of India (GoI) and the Government of the US has signed an Investment Incentive Agreement (IIA) in Tokyo.
·
QUAD was established
shortly after the Indian Ocean tsunami of 2004
to coordinate humanitarian assistance.
·
The first QUAD Leaders’
Meeting held in March 2021, in-person Summit in Washington D.C., US in
September 2021; and virtual meeting in March 2022.
·
It has also established six leader-level working groups
on the Covid-19 pandemic, climate change, technology, cybersecurity, space and
infrastructure.

INTERNATIONAL BOOKER PRIZE

The 2022 International
Booker Prize for Translated Fiction
was awarded to ‘Tomb of Sand’
written by Geetanjali Shree and translated by Daisy Rockwell.

The book was originally published in
Hindi as Ret Samadhi in 2018.
·
This is the first book
in any Indian language to win the prestigious International Booker Prize and
this is the first novel translated from Hindi to win the award.
·
In 1997, Arundhati Roy
became the first Indian to win the Booker Prize for her novel, “The God of Small Things.”
·
The International Booker Prize was instituted in 2005 as the “Man BookerInternational Prize” and is
awarded every year for a single book that is translated into English and
published in the UK or Ireland.

‘INS NIRDESHAK’ INDIAN NAVY’S SURVEY VESSEL LAUNCHED BY
GRSE
·
The second of the four
Survey Vessels (Large) (SVL) ‘Nirdeshak’
(Yard 3026), was launched at Kattupalli, Chennai, Tamil Nadu.
·
The ship was built by
Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE) in collaboration with L&T
Shipbuilding Limited for the Indian Navy.
·
The first of class ship ‘Sandhayak’ was
launched on 05 December 2021 at GRSE, Kolkata.
·
The new SVL ships will
replace the existing Sandhayak Class survey ships with new generation
hydrographic equipment to collect oceanographic data.
·
The new vessel takes
its name from a former Indian Naval Survey ship, Nirdeshak, which was
decommissioned in December 2014 after 32 years of glorious service.

a low flying target.

place from Talwar Class Indian Navy warship – INS Teg.

A surface-to-air missile,
also known as a ground-to-air missile or surface-to-air guided weapon, is a
missile designed to be launched from the ground to destroy aircraft or other
missiles.

SAM can be Long Range Surface to Air Missile (LRSAM)
and Medium Range Surface to Air Missile
(MRSAM).
·
LRSAM: to defend against
any type of airborne threat including aircraft, helicopters, anti-ship
missiles, and UAVs as well as cruise missiles and combat jets.
·
MRSAM: High-response,
quick reaction, vertically launched supersonic missile, designed to neutralize
enemy aerial threats – missiles, aircraft, guided bombs, helicopters.
